Introduction
A unique and trend setting project for Conservation and Development of Medicinal Plant Resources focusing on development of Dashmool plants was developed by Gujarat Forest development and the same has been sanctioned by National Medicinal Plants Board, New Delhi, Ministry of Health & Family welfare, GOI.
Dashmoolarisht is a decoction of ten roots of equal parts of the roots of; Shivan, Bael, Tetu, Patla, Arni, Bethi Bhoi-ringni, Ubhi bhoi-ringni, Pithavan, Salparni and Gokharu. Dashmoolarist is indicated for aggravations of the nervous system and pain when there are signs of debility. It is also used as a decoction or enema for lower back pain, sciatica, tremors, Parkinson’s disease and inflammation in the pelvic and sacral region. For dry cough and respiratory weakness and in high vata, Dashmoolarisht can be used as a tonic to strengthen the system. When the immune system is depleted and is not throwing off fevers, the decoction can cause disphoresis and release the trapped ama toxins.
Bio-medicaly it is an expectorant, anti-asthmatic, nervine, febrifuge and analgesic.
Dashmool

Need for intervention
Root based availability of raw material (Dashmool group) is limited, use of substitutes in the formulations results to lower level of efficacy.

Hence development and conservation of medicinal plant resource is an imperative, the features of this project are as under :

Objectives
Conservation and development of dashmool plants
  Standardisation of sustainable harvesting
  Enhancement of the people’s participation
  Empowerment of local people
Improvement of the economic condition of local people
  Development of the data base

Stakeholders
Traditional practitioners and health healers, Pharmaceutical industries and traders, Forest department, Research organizations, Universities, NGOs, GSFDC Ltd., AYUSH.

Strategy
Area specific, end use linked, people-centric species spectrum with blending of conservation and development of Dashmool plant resource having institutional arrangements for implementation with sustainable availability of root based raw material.

Work Program
Establishment of Medicinal Plant Development Areas for dashmool plants, distribution of seedlings and supporting activities like marketing infrastructure and HRD.

Establishment of medicinal Plant Development Areas
Concentrated Forest areas of 500 ha. For Dashmool plantations in Valsad, Surat and Narmada districts.
7 species out of 10 species namely, Shivan, Bael, Patala, Tetu, Arni, Pithvan and Salparni are proposed for plantations. Gokhru, Ubhibhoi-ringni and Bethibhoi-ringni are available in sufficient quantity hence not proposed for plantation.
  Plant population of 5625/ha.
Annual harvesting of the roots of the shrubs, three year cycle for tree species under hedge.
Mechanism for replanting of harvested areas.
